Queensland’s International Education Board to Meet in Townsville

The State’s top international education and training experts will converge on North Queensland tomorrow when the Board of Queensland Education and Training International (QETI) meets in Townsville.

The QETI Board, which represents all four educational sectors (schools, English language and pathways, vocational education and training and universities), meets four times a year to set the strategic direction for Trade Queensland’s international education and training arm.

Minister for Trade John Mickel said the Townsville meeting and associated networking function are a great way for our Board members to see first-hand the growing North Queensland market.

“International education in Queensland is a continually expanding market, and our regional areas, particularly North Queensland, play a large part in this success,” Mr Mickel said.

“The Board will also be briefed by representatives from James Cook University on further educational opportunities in North Queensland.

“This is a great opportunity for the Townsville international education and training industry to showcase their services and products to the Board of Queensland’s peak industry body.

“QETI assists the ongoing work of regions around the State in promoting international education at a local level and Townsville is no exception,” Mr Mickel said.

Queensland Education and Training International Board members attending the meeting are
the Honourable Paul Braddy, Chair, Queensland Education and Training International; Mr Scott Sheppard, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Queensland University of Technology; Professor Rob Stable, Vice-Chancellor, Bond University; Professor Trevor Grigg, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (International and Development), University of Queensland and Professor Scott Bowman, Pro Vice-Chancellor James Cook University.

Also attending are Mr Rob Whiddon, General Manager, Trade Queensland and Ms Joanne House, Executive Director, Department of Education, Training and the Arts (DETA) International.

QETI supports the Queensland Government’s Smart State Strategy by providing leadership and support for all of Queensland’s international education and training providers.

Queensland’s export education industry was valued at $1.6 billion in 2006-7 – the third largest export industry in the State.
