Southern Downs Regional Council receives disaster funding

Southern Downs Regional Council will receive more than $2 million in funding to repair its damaged road network that occurred as the result of flooding in December 2007 and January 2008.

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt said floodwaters had caused significant damage, due to subsidence, to the council’s road network.

“The flooding that occurred in the Southern Downs Regional Council area has caused considerable damage to the local road network,” Mr Pitt said.

“The reliance on local roads by regional communities means that this damage has a great impact on the area’s accessibility and transport.

“Ratepayers would have been disadvantaged by this natural disaster if Southern Downs Regional Council was required to shoulder the financial burden.”

“As a result, the State and Commonwealth governments have contributed $2,015,426, with the regional council contributing $169,000 towards the repair work.”

Mr Pitt said the funding was provided through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements program, a joint State and Commonwealth initiative.
