MILES STATE SCHOOL IS DARLING DOWNS WATER WISE WINNER

Water Minister Craig Wallace has congratulated Miles State School for winning a Waterwise Award as part of Keep Australia Beautiful’s annual Green and Healthy Schools competition.

“Miles State School has shown great imagination to conserve water as their region suffers under drought conditions,” Mr Wallace said.

“Drought tolerant plants have been selected for the school grounds, with the water to irrigate the grounds supplied through eight, 40,000 litres tanks. I am advised this same water is also used for local agricultural projects in the community.

“I congratulate Miles State School for its Waterwise Award and its recognition in the Green and Healthy Schools program.’’

Mr Wallace said thousands of students and teachers from about 550 schools, nearly one third of Queensland schools, participated in the awards.

“Waterwise Awards are being presented to a school in each of the 11 regions managed by Keep Australia Beautiful,’’ Mr Wallace said.

“Our sponsorship of these awards highlight the Bligh Government's commitment to waterwise initiatives, ensuring a secure and sustainable water supply for Queensland.”

The Green and Healthy Schools activity is Keep Australia Beautiful’s flagship program and encourages schools to develop a green and healthy philosophy. It aims to tackle a range of issues at the school level, including environmental protection and litter prevention.
