Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Retail and hospitality training for Queensland’s unemployed
The National Retail Association (NRA) and Queensland Government are tackling industry labour shortages through a new $296,960 employment project.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the NRA’s Service Industry Recruitment Program is being funded through the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.
“This project will assist 160 unemployed people from Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Hervey Bay and Cairns,” Mr Mickel said.
“The resources boom and a low unemployment rate of 3.8 per cent have meant many employers are struggling to find suitable staff. This makes it a great time to train unemployed people, who have missed out on sharing and contributing to our strong economy, so they can find stable jobs.
“Participants who join the Service Industry Recruitment Program will complete job preparation activities, accredited training and work experience and will benefit from NRA’s expertise and contacts in the industry.”
National Retail Association General Manager, Training and Development Paul Willis said the program will run 10 classes each lasting eight weeks.
“The project offers accredited training in retail, hospitality or tourism so participants can pursue the skills and work which interests them,” Mr Willis said.
“Language, literacy and numeracy support as well as life skills and job search training will also be available so each participant can get the most out of this program.
“Participants will be matched with suitable employers for a week of work experience and will receive mentoring and post participation support to help them into a new job.
“This is a great way for unemployed people to get a foot in the door and make the transition into steady employment.”
During 2008/09 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 15,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving assistance 71 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
