Premier Anna Bligh today officially opened the new $15.8 million Park Lake State School, sharing in the celebrations with students, teachers and parents.

The second new Gold Coast school to be officially opened this week, Ms Bligh said Park Lake State School was a part of a huge investment in education on the Gold Coast.

“The Gold Coast is one of the fastest growing areas in Queensland, and as families move to enjoy its great lifestyle the demand for quality education increases,” Ms Bligh said.

“Park Lake State School is one of three new Gold Coast schools to open this year, and our investment doesn’t end there,” Ms Bligh said.

“Of the four schools my Government has committed to build this financial year, three of them are on the Gold Coast and will be open for business in 2009.

“That’s six new schools and an increase of 3680 in enrolment capacity in just two years,” she said.

Ms Bligh said Park Lake State School has 250 students enrolled from Prep to Year 7.

“The school has 20 classrooms as well as resource and music centres, an administration building, full oval and sports storage area, a covered area and canteen.

“But more importantly, this is a clever ‘green’ school.

“A 300,000 litre onsite water storage is used for irrigation and the operation of amenities and energy management features include a managed lighting system that turns off lights if a room is empty.

“These sustainable features also help the students learn about the importance of looking after our environment, and teachers have included them as part of the curriculum.

“Park Lake State School is also fully networked with fibre optic and wireless internet capabilities, ensuring students have access to state-of-the-art information and communication technology facilities,” she said.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the Bligh Government was committed to providing high-quality education facilities for all students to help them reach their potential.

“We want to ensure our school building projects keep pace with growth and students have access to the best possible facilities to support their education,” Mr Welford said.

The Queensland Government invested $8.3 million in Park Lake State School, with a $7.5 million contribution from the Federal Government.
