Think op shopping, vintage magazines, retro patterns think Mother Maria

Successful Sunshine Coast designer Katie Gannon will be debuting her new season of much anticipated Mother Maria label at the upcoming Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival (MBFF).

Katie will showcase at MBFF in the Queensland Government Design Innovation Group Show on Thursday 28 August at 9pm at the Brisbane Hilton.

Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Desley Boyle said Katie should be noted not only for making beautiful clothes but also for her stand on ethical and environmental issues.

“One of Katie’s rules for production is that her clothing is always created under ethical work conditions,” Ms Boyle said.

“Another is that each garment sewn includes something that has been recycled, whether it be a piece of fabric or simply a button.

“Katie’s keen eye for quality recycled materials, and love for new and old styles makes Mother Maria a very unique, innovative label in today’s competitive, mass produced market.”

The youthful designer Katie Gannon said she was surprised to be picked after showcasing her label at last years MBFF and but was ready to jump at the opportunity.

“I was in the 2007 show and heard that people really enjoyed my segment, so it was great to have the support from the organisers to re-enter for 2008,” Ms Gannon said.

“It's an amazing opportunity to gain community awareness of your label, the PR and media coverage that surrounds MBFF is incredible,” she said

“Professional fashion parades can be very expensive to run, so we are very lucky as emerging designers to have the opportunity in such an event,” she said.

“I hope to help my local stockists by creating some hype around my designs, if it contributes to sales, then that’s a positive for the growth of my business.

“I'd also love to see pictures of my segment in upcoming magazines, it's always a buzz to open a glossy publication and see one of your designs strutting down the catwalk.”
Inspired by op shopping, vintage magazines, and retro patterns, Mother Maria’s garments are a lot different to others on the market.

“The range was born from my love for vintage fabrics, blending retro prints with bold new colours and timeless silhouettes of era’s gone by,” Katie said.

“Mother Maria has gradually built from me piecing together individual garments on my home sewing machine, to my now contracting over 30 sewers in 2 countries.”

Katie Gannon said the name of her label was born from Katie’s late polish grandmother, Maria Duchnicz, her source for inspiration.

Ms Boyle said designers featuring in the Queensland Government Design Innovation Group Show were chosen from an open application process.

“The designers picked were chosen for their label’s youthful appeal and design innovation,” Ms Boyle said.

Tickets for the show are $26.50 and available from QTIX 136 246.
