A leading North Queensland scientist who could potentially halve the world’s reliance on oil has been recognised by the Bligh Government.

Minister for Women Margaret Keech is delighted to announce Dr Kirsten Heimann is in the running for the Smart Women Smart State Awards 2008, some of Queensland’s most prestigious awards.

“Congratulations to Dr Heimann. Her dedication and innovation are being duly recognised,” Mrs Keech said.

“The Bligh Government is improving services and by supporting and encouraging people to excel we continue grow and improve Queensland,”

“To be short-listed for these awards is a great honour, Dr Heimann is up against some of the best minds in Queensland in some of the most complex and crucial fields.”

“The government has provided $166,000 to this project that is keeping Queensland at the forefront in the fight against climate change.”

Dr Heimann is a finalist in the Women in Industry/Business – Science award for her project on the biotechnical and environmental applications of micro-algae.

“This work could potentially make us independent of fossil-fuels,” Dr Heimann said.

“My research shows micro-algae can be used to make quality bio-diesel at what may be considered coastal wasteland sites,

“Algae can produce fuel in high quantities without using valuable freshwater supplies,”

The winners of the Smart Women - Smart State Awards 2008 will be announced at a ceremony being held at the State Library of Queensland in Brisbane on 2 September 2008.

“These awards showcase women who are excelling in traditionally male dominated fields of science, engineering, information and communication technology, and the environment,” Mrs Keech said

“The awards are part of the State Government’s Smart Women - Smart State Strategy and have recognised the achievements of Queensland women for the past six years.”
