Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Gympie project builds workforce

A Skilling Queenslanders for Work project is set to provide the engineering and construction industries in the Gympie region with 30 newly skilled and job ready workers within 12 months.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the project has received $114,540 Queensland Government funding to provide participants with practical experience, job preparation and accredited training.

“All participants will complete a course in General Safety Induction and First Aid to provide the basic prerequisites for employment in the construction industry,” Mr Mickel said.

“While unemployment is at a low 3.8 per cent in Queensland, there are still people out there who are having difficulty finding work.

“Projects like this under our Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative are helping to give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce.”

Cooloola Human Services Network Association Inc President Ken Meldrum said 24 participants will be offered further accredited training in construction or engineering.

“Each group will complete a hands-on project to apply their technical and team work skills in a practical work environment,” Mr Meldrum said.

“This project may include building a trailer or cubby house which will be raffled off in a charity draw with all proceeds being donated to Little Haven Palliative Care Inc.

“Other training will include job searching and interpersonal development to increase chances of long-term employment in a team environment.”

More than 120 jobs for long-term unemployed or under-employed people could be created in the Mary Valley and Gympie region as a result of training and employment associated with the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam project.

$750,000 of Skilling Queenslanders for Work funding has been allocated in 2008/09 to give local people the chance to gain skills required to work on the proposed dam.

During 2008/09 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 15,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving assistance 71 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
