Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Sunshine Coast residents care to update their skills

Sixty Sunshine Coast family day care workers will be better prepared to work in the industry after they receive Queensland Government funded training to improve and update their child care skills.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said future legislation will require all family day care workers to have qualifications. This project will give participants access to accredited training and the opportunity to network with industry professionals.

“With a low unemployment rate of 3.8 per cent we need to retain and attract as many day-care workers as we can, especially given current skills and labour shortages,” Mr Mickel said.

“This project is about giving low-skilled and vulnerable workers the means to maintain a good standard of work by updating their skills for an industry with high demands and even higher expectations.

“More than $45,000 has been committed to this project under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative in addition to a direct grant of $163,253 from the Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE which will deliver the accredited training.

“Participants will undergo seven modules from a Certificate III in Children’s Services over the course of eight three-hour evening workshops delivered at Noosa (15 participants), Maroochydore (15) and Caloundra (30). The Maroochydore and Caloundra groups will begin in January 2009.”

Mr Mickel said the project would be delivered flexibly through self-paced evening classes to meet the needs of day-care providers.

Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE Head of School, Community Services Brett Thomson said participants from all three locations will be offered mentoring, tutorial support and work place visits.

“The main focus of this project is to better equip participants to work effectively in a changing environment,” Mr Thomson said.

“Participants will develop high-quality practices with a focus on ethics, occupational health and safety, current legislative requirements and Commonwealth accredited principles.”

During 2008/09 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 15,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving assistance 71 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
