The students of Elanora State School on the Gold Coast today celebrated the official opening of their new $590,000 Performing Arts Centre.

Minister for Education, Training and the Arts Rod Welford attended the opening this morning, which featured a student dance and music performance.

“This wonderful new facility includes a conference room, costume storage rooms, presentation and data facilities, stage lighting and full wireless internet facilities,” Mr Welford said.

“I believe an interest in the creative and performing arts, including music, drama and dance, has positive flow-on benefits for other areas of learning.

“Elanora State School already enjoys a strong academic, sporting and cultural reputation and the new Performing Arts Centre will further support the students’ achievements.”

Mr Welford said the project was a team effort, with the State Government contributing $343,000, including a $30,000 Gambling Community Fund grant for air-conditioning and seating.

“This project reflects the Bligh Government’s commitment to providing high-quality education facilities for all Queensland students,” he said.

“I also acknowledge the Federal Government’s contribution of $147,000.

“The school community and the Parents and Citizens Association also worked tirelessly to raise funds.

“This new Performing Arts Centre is used by the students during the day and by a local dance group after-hours.

“I congratulate all involved for helping to deliver this valuable community asset.”

The 2008-09 State Budget allocated $532 million to continue to modernise and build schools throughout the state.
