Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
Police Minister Judy Spence and Commissioner Bob Atkinson have rejected claims an Outlaw Bikie Gang will be given free rein on the Gold Coast during its annual national bike run this week.
Ms Spence said: “Police will be keeping a very close eye on all gang members participating in the bike run, and any criminal or anti-social behaviour will be targeted.
“Make no mistake – Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Members are not welcome in Queensland and police are proactive when it comes to cracking down on their illegal activities. However, we can not prevent them from legally participating in a group bike ride.
“Police will be out in force to ensure all participants obey the road rules. Anyone who breaks the law either on the road or during their visit will face the penalties.
“The Queensland Police Service Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Task Force will also be monitoring the movements and activities of participants.”
Commissioner Atkinson said police throughout the South East corner have been preparing for the Rebels’ Outlaw Motorcycle Gang’s National Run, and plans are in place for both traffic management and monitoring by police across the region.
“Over 300 motorcycle riders are expected to travel between Coffs Harbour and the Gold Coast, before travelling up to the Sunshine Coast as part of the Rebel’s bike run this weekend,” Commissioner Atkinson said.
“Some may also attend the annual ‘Bike Week’ on the Gold Coast next week.
“As is the case during all bike runs by Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs, police will be watching them every step of the way.
“During the past 12 months, the QPS Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Task Force, in conjunction with regional police, has coordinated the response to the Bandidos National Run, Finks Rolling Bike Show on the Gold Coast and a number of other Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Poker Runs.
“Police operations during these events enabled significant intelligence gathering, and the enforcement of criminal and traffic offences – sending a clear message to all Outlaw Motorcycle gang members that they are being closely watched in Queensland.”
