Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Trade Queensland, the Government’s export agency, will begin a series of workshops in Mackay on 3 September to provide local business people with the skills necessary to take up the export challenge and begin selling products and services in overseas markets.

Minister for Trade John Mickel and Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin said that Trade Queensland’s Getting Export Smart program would provide practical, hands-on training for Mackay-based companies, with experienced industry and government export advisors facilitating the workshops.

“Exporting is a vital contributor to Queensland's economy, with merchandise exports last year worth more than $35.4 billion

“Service exports from Queensland were worth a further $7.79 billion in 2006-07”, Mr Mickel said.

“The series of five exporting workshops follows on from Trade Queensland’s recent Global Connect initiative which was attended by 35 local business people in Mackay on 1 July.

“The Mackay program begins with an assessment of export potential for your business on 3 September, and progresses through additional sessions on export plan preparation, partnerships, effective marketing overseas, pricing, freight, packaging and payment procedures as well as e-business options and online marketing strategies in subsequent workshops.

“The program will also link Mackay-based businesses to a dedicated client manager and the right agencies to assist you in becoming a successful exporter,” Mr Mulherin said.

Tony Britton from successful Mackay-based mining engineering business, JSIS Engineering Pty Ltd, said that the Getting Export Smart had been a useful tool in helping to build exports for the company in growth markets in India, China and Papua New Guinea.

“Following the Getting Export Smart process helped our company with developing and putting in place a workable plan to secure export contracts and provide the high level of service that our overseas clients require,” Mr Britton said.

Mr Mickel said that Trade Queensland delivers services across Queensland and in 13 international locations.

“Taking Smart State goods and services to the world contributes to the bottom line of Queensland businesses, helps grow the State’s economy and creates jobs for local people.

“The benefits of exporting from your business can include balancing seasonal demand and market risk, increased sales and turnover, higher prices and improved economies of scale”, Mr Mickel said.

“I urge all Mackay local businesses that are considering exporting now or in the future to get in touch with Trade Queensland and sign up for Getting Export Smart,” Mr Mulherin said.
