Spence: Drugs found in baby’s nappy

Corrective Services Minister Judy Spence said officers continue to foil attempts to smuggle in drugs, including a recent case in which tablets were allegedly hidden in a baby’s nappy.

Ms Spence said: “A 20-year-old woman has been charged after allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs into Woodford Correctional Centre in her baby’s nappy on Saturday (August 9).

“The woman and her two children were scheduled to visit a 22-year-old male prisoner at the centre when a search of the 10-month-old’s nappy located two small green water balloons containing tablets, believed to be Subutex.

“A further search at the woman’s Bundamba home located a utensil inside a child’s backpack and a clip seal bag of green leafy material.

“The woman has been charged with supply of a dangerous drug within a correctional facility, possession of a dangerous drug, possession of an implement and failing to appear in Ipswich Magistrates Court.

“The prisoner has also been charged with one count of supply of a dangerous drug within a correctional facility.

“The woman and the prisoner are both scheduled to appear in Caboolture Magistrates Court on September 25 in relation to the charges of supplying drugs within a correctional centre,” Ms Spence said.

In another case a 28-year-old man has been charged with supply of a dangerous drug within a correctional facility and released on bail yesterday on the condition that he does not go within 500m of a correctional facility within Queensland.

Ms Spence said: “He was charged on Sunday (August 17) when a search located a small plastic bag hidden on his body. He was scheduled to visit a 33-year-old prisoner at Brisbane Correctional Centre.

“It is alleged the bag contained four crushed white tablets.

“The man was charged with supply of a dangerous drug within a correctional facility and appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday.

The Magistrate granted bail with a condition that he not go within 500m of a correctional facility within Queensland. He is scheduled to appear in Ipswich Magistrates Court on September 9.
