Premier
The Honourable Anna Bligh
NAMES FOR NEW BRIDGE TOP 200
More than 200 naming suggestions have been received from Queenslanders keen to put their mark on Brisbane’s newest bridge at Tank Street.
Premier Anna Bligh said the 215 entries received so far ranged from Aboriginal words and maritime suggestions to names linking the bridge to its location between Tank Street and Kurilpa Park near the State Library.
“Spinnaker Bridge, the Cultural Connection Bridge and Turrbal Bridge, referring to one of the traditional owners of the Kurilpa Park area, are some of the more unique names submitted,” Ms Bligh said.
“We’ve also had a suggestion for the Go Betweens Bridge, referring to the iconic Brisbane band famed for songs such as Streets of your Town.”
Ms Bligh said the winning entrant would literally make their mark on Brisbane, with a plaque on the bridge identifying them as the person who provided the winning name.
“The winner will be an integral part of the opening of the bridge and will have the honour of being on of the first to walk across it,” Ms Bligh said.
“A presentation to the winner will be made late in 2008, once the judging panel has deliberated over the numerous entries and come to a decision.”
Ms Bligh, The Sunday Mail editor Liz Deegan and new Queensland Government architect Philip Follent will judge the competition to name the bridge at Tank St shortly after entries close on September 30, 2008.
