South Bank festivities this Sunday mark countdown to Seniors Week ‘08

A free Seniors Fun Day and Expo is on this Sunday, August 17, at South Bank Parklands with an action-packed program of activities.

Communities and Seniors Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the day features 2.5km and 5km walks which take in the sights of River Terrace and the Boardwalk. There’s also an expo featuring businesses offering discounts and services.

“The annual fun day is a great way to celebrate the important contribution seniors make to Queensland, as well promote healthy ageing and the importance of an active lifestyle,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“I’m expecting thousands of people – young and old – to come along to take part in the activities, enjoy the music, food and have some fun,” she said.

The main hub will be Suncorp Piazza, with music starting from 8.30am.

Performances will be given by The Peppers Pep Band, Nuunukaal Kunjiel Indigenous dancers, Queensland Youth Orchestra Big Band, Pop Eyed acrobatics, the After Hours Band, Carol Lloyd and the Women in Voice Orchestra, Happy Tappers, Liza Beamish and Lachlan Baker, and the Rio Rhythmics Latin Dancers.

Ms Nelson-Carr said a highlight will be performances by semi finalists in this year’s Seniors Superstars competition.

“With live entertainment, fun walks, a free sausage sizzle and interactive activities like hourly Tai Chi and easy exercise sessions, as well as salsa, samba and tap dancing, Queenslanders young and old should are encouraged to join in,” she said.

The 2008 Seniors Fun Day and Expo is a great teaser for the Seniors Week which is celebrated around the State from August 23-31.

“From an intergenerational concert in Charter Towers and a Jazz and Swing night in New Farm, to a Devonshire Morning Tea in Goondiwindi, there’s a great variety of activities planned and I invite all Queenslanders to take part,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“Seniors Week is about communities coming together to promote positive attitudes towards older people and ageing, and foster friendships between generations.”
