NEW GRADUATE ICT SKILLS RECOGNISED

Information and Communication Technology Minister Robert Schwarten today congratulated Queensland Government ICT graduate Travis Malone, 24, from Arana Hills on being awarded a major industry award by the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA).

Mr Schwarten said the prestigious AIIA award of a world study tour offered invaluable ICT experience for Travis.

“This is a fantastic achievement for Travis and will enhance his knowledge and experience as well as his future career in the ICT industry,” Mr Schwarten said.

Mr Schwarten praised all the graduates involved in the Queensland Government’s 2007 ICT Career Graduates program for their contribution to improving the way the Queensland Government works.

“The AIIA has been working closely with the Queensland Government to develop skills as part of the Queensland Government ICT Career Graduate Development Program,” Mr Schwarten said.

“I am informed that the quality of work demonstrated by the graduates in the program has been exceptional, as has their commitment to developing their skills further,” he said.

AIIA Queensland Committee Chair Cathy Ford said skills shortages were well documented in the ICT industry, and the AIIA felt it was important to encourage skills and enhance the knowledge of ICT professionals.

“The AIIA is pleased to award a world study tour to Travis to further develop his skills in ICT by being able to visit member organisations around the world,” Ms Ford said.

Travis said he is looking forward to undertaking the study tour.

“It is a great opportunity for me to better understand the global nature of the ICT industry and I am delighted to represent Queensland,” he said.

Mr Schwarten reminded final year university students that only 10 days remain until applications close for the 2009 intake of the Queensland Government’s ICT Career Graduate Development Program.

The program offers:
• a two-year placement in a range of roles in ICT across the Queensland Government and the Brisbane and Logan City Councils
• a competitive salary and superannuation package
• ongoing professional development
• networking opportunities with other ICT professionals.

Applications close on Monday 18 August 2008. Graduates interested in applying for the program can apply online by visiting www.qgcio.qld.gov.au
