The Honourable Margaret Keech
Minister congratulates Gaven residents for showing true community spirit
Child Safety Minister Margaret Keech has congratulated the Oxenford and Coomera Community Youth Centre for its hard work supporting local families, children and young people.
Mrs Keech will join local member, Gaven MP Phil Gray, in presenting workers with a certificate of recognition today for the many services they provide ranging from parenting programs and friendship groups right through to live concerts, bingo and martial arts classes.
“This is a true community centre which offers something for everyone, no matter how young or old,” Mrs Keech said.
“People can come here and meet other locals who share similar interests, take classes to learn something new or get practical advice and support.
“I’m particularly interested in learning more about the parenting programs like Parenting made easier, the New Mums group and the Super Parenting series that the centre offers.
“It’s vital that new parents in Gaven are supported in their important job of raising children.
Mrs Keech said centres like this one played a major role in uniting communities together.
“Often when people are struggling, or feeling isolated or lonely all they need is someone to talk to, or someone to offer some help or advice,” she said
“Sometimes it can be as simple as coming to a class where they can meet others who share their interests.
“It’s these types of support networks we need to create happy, healthy, strong communities where people look out for one another.”
Mr Gray, who is also a member of the centre, said the centre was a local hub and everyone involved with its operation should be applauded.
“I’m really proud to have a community centre in my electorate that is such a great example of what people can achieve by working together,” he said.
“I know Minister Keech has had a long association with the centre and was instrumental in getting it up and running.
“It’s that sort of commitment, not only from the Government but from everyone in our community who is involved with the services and programs provided here, that show true community spirit.
“It’s clear from the success of this centre that the people of Gaven care for one another and it’s a great feeling to be part of something like this.”
