School rugby union stars vie for state honours
School rugby union players from across Queensland will converge on the Sunshine Coast this week for the Queensland School Sport Rugby Union 15-Years-and-Under State Championships.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said 220 students would be competing in the four-day event, which runs from Thursday 14 August until Sunday 17 August, at the Noosa “Dolphins” Rugby Union Club.
“I want to congratulate each of the players on their selection and wish them every success on the field," Mr Welford said.
“This is a great opportunity for young athletes to compete at a high level while meeting and sharing experiences with their peers from across the state, particularly in this Year of Physical Activity.
“The local community has shown great support for this sporting event with nearly 60 billets being found through schools from Nambour to Noosa.”
Mr Welford said teams from 10 Queensland sporting regions would battle it out for state honours at the championships.
“The regions represented are – Metropolitan West, Metropolitan North, Metropolitan East, Wide Bay, Capricornia, Darling Downs, Northern, Peninsula, South Coast and Sunshine Coast,” he said.
“The teams are split into two pools and will play four games each in the pool stages before progressing to the final series.
“Presentation of the championship shield and medallions will be made following the conclusion of the final game on Sunday.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated teachers and school staff who have given considerable time and effort to make these championships a success.”
