Bundaberg unemployed hit the jobs mark
Thirteen long-term unemployed Bundaberg residents will be ready to make an impact on the workforce when they graduate from a Queensland Government jobs project tomorrow.
The participants completed modules from Certificate I and II in Business Administration.
Gary Fenlon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, said the graduation was part of IMPACT Make Your Mark’s $613,830 project which helped 227 unemployed people find work over 12-months.
“While unemployment is at a low 3.8 per cent in Queensland, it is important to remember there are still people who are having difficulty finding work,” he said.
“This includes people who have spent many years caring for their families and want to return to the workforce.
“These 13 participants now have a competitive edge when applying for jobs.
“They have formal skills acquired through accredited training and confidence that they can develop essential workplace skills such as use computers and work as a team member.
“It is projects like this under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative that help give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce.
“With the reality of an ageing workforce we need all the people who want to work participating in the workforce.
“The key to achieving this is to help people build the skills needed by employers and industry,” Mr Fenlon said.
IMPACT Make Your Mark Program Manager – Training Joan Graham-Jones said two participants have made their mark on the workforce.
“Two participants have already found work, and both of them juggled work and the accredited training to ensure they graduate tomorrow,” she said.
“Four other people received positive feedback after interviews, which inspired them to keep up the search for work and increased their confidence that they will find a job soon.”
“I believe this is testament to the participants’ determination and desire to get back into the workforce and I have every confidence they will all find work in the coming weeks.”
The Skilling for the Bundaberg Workforce graduation will take place at 10am on Wednesday 13 August at IMPACT Make Your Mark, 106-108 Bargara Road, Bundaberg.
During 2008/09 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 15,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving assistance 71 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
