Indigenous women inspired to lead

Indigenous women and girls are being inspired to become leaders in their communities, as part of a Bligh Government leadership initiative.

A series of Leadership Seminars for Indigenous women and girls are currently running in communities throughout Queensland.

Minister for Women Margaret Keech said the seminar’s theme ‘Strong Voices – Strong Women’ aims to increase women’s leadership abilities.

Mrs Keech will be a special guest speaker at the next seminar in Yarrabah today, Tuesday August 12.

She said the seminar, developed in partnership with the local community, had attracted a huge response with more than 130 women set to attend.

“I am delighted to be able to attend this seminar and look forward to meeting and helping these women who are determined to help change their communities,” Mrs Keech said

“These free seminars will enable women to meet and network with leaders in their community and develop the skills and confidence they need to move into leadership roles.

“With highly regarded Indigenous women speaking at the events, women and girls can learn from their leadership experiences first hand.

“Through a forum approach the women will share information, training and ideas to help them to lead more effectively or become leaders in their community.

“Many Indigenous women already play a vital role in guiding the younger generations.

“By sharing their experiences these positive and enlightening speakers will spread their resourcefulness, strength and initiative.

“Their stories and resilience are a source of inspiration to all, especially for younger women and girls wanting to develop their leadership skills.

“Women these days are defying old occupational stereotypes, breaking through the glass ceiling, taking control of their finances and leading the community.

“These seminars will be a place to celebrate their achievements, and speak to or mentor other women in their community - giving stronger voices to strong women”.

The Bligh Government’s Office for Women is partnering with local organisations to host the seminars which have already taken place in Mount Isa and Cherbourg in July this year.

The Community Leadership Seminars are part of the Smart Women Smart State seminar series run by Office for Women.
