Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
Spence: Sports stars encourage Queenslanders to find their 30 at the Ekka
Some of Queensland’s top sporting stars will be encouraging Queenslanders to ‘Find their 30’ on People’s Day at this year’s Ekka.
Sport Minister Judy Spence urged members of the public to come along and meet their favourite celebrities and take advantage of all the fun and free activities on offer at the Department of Sport and Recreation stand.
Ms Spence said: “People’s Day at the Ekka is always a great day out for Queensland families, and the chance to meet your favourite sporting personalities will make this year’s event one to remember.
“Former AFL star and TV presenter Richard “Champs” Champion, former Broncos star-players Kevin Walters and Mick De Vere, Brisbane Lions player Josh Drummond, Queensland Roar players Matthew McKay and Sergio van Dijk, Queensland Gymnast Kelsey Cook, Queensland Firebird Lauren Nourse and Gold Coast Blaze basketballer Greg Vanderjagt will all be on hand to sign autographs.
“Fans will be able to chat to their sporting heroes about easy ways to find 30 minutes of physical activity a day, and learn about the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.
“Visitors can take on their families and friends in the 8-metre high rock wall challenge to see who can climb to the top in the shortest time, with free prizes for every climber.
“There is also a mini-obstacle course for those people who like to keep their feet on the ground.
“We want to get the message to Queenslanders that by making small changes in their daily lives they can achieve the recommended 30 minutes of exercise each day.
“The 'Find Your 30' campaign is a Queensland Government initiative which encourages all Queenslanders to adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle.
“The reality is less than 50% of the Queensland adult population is sufficiently active to receive health benefits, and two out of three males and one in two females are overweight.
“Even more concerning is the fact that in the first year of school in Queensland, 17% of boys and 20% of girls are already overweight. For many of these children this means they will then become obese adults.
“For people of all ages, simple activities like brisk walking, swimming, dancing and cycling can help reduce the risk of a range of diseases.
“I urge everyone to visit the Department of Sport and Recreation display at the Ekka to learn from our State’s sporting champions how easy it is to 'Find your 30' each day and take positive steps towards a happier, healthier lifestyle.”
Celebrities will be signing autographs from 11:30am on Wednesday, 13 August at the Department of Sport and Recreation display.
The Queensland Government Pavilion is located in the Frank Nicklin Pavilion, which is next to the Coffee Club Pavilion on Main Parade. The rock wall challenge is on the corner of Main Parade and Short Street.
