Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt today announced the start of design work for a future upgrade of Morayfield Road between the Bruce Highway and Gaffield Street.

Mr Pitt said design for the upgrade of the 3.3km section of road was expected to be finished by late 2009, at which time construction timeframes would be examined.

“Planning for the upgrade of this major arterial road was a complex task, given the substantial traffic growth caused by rapid development in Burpengary and Caboolture” Mr Pitt said.

Kallangur MP Ken Hayward said Morayfield Road now carried between 19,500 and 25,800 vehicles per day.

“This upgrade will provide a safer, more free-flowing road environment for all road users, including motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

“Design work will focus on upgrading the existing two-lane road to a four-lane, median-divided road, with provision for an upgrade to six lanes in the future.”

The design of the preferred option will incorporate:

  • a service road between Gleeson Road and Paradise Road to separate through traffic from local traffic
  • new bridge and pedestrian facility over the rail line
  • u-turn facilities at Graham Road, Paradise Road and Gleeson Road
  • new traffic signals at Gleeson Road and Paradise Road
  • upgrades to the intersections of Graham Road and Lindsay Road
  • provision of pedestrian and cyclist facilities
  • possible fauna protection measures such as fauna crossings or fences.

“The local community provided valuable feedback throughout the planning process," Mr Hayward said.

"This feedback, together with extensive environmental, traffic and engineering studies, has given the project team some really solid key design features."

The design work will be undertaken by Connell Wagner.
