The Honourable Warren Pitt

Million dollar maintenance works for Gulf roads

Almost 600km of state-controlled roads in the Gulf of Carpentaria region will benefit from a new maintenance contract to improve surface condition and driver safety.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt today announced the $1.01 million 12 month contract had been awarded to Carpentaria Shire Council.

"Maintenance work will be carried out on the Burke Developmental Road and other key state-controlled roads in the Gulf region," Mr Pitt said.

Member for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan said the roads connected the Gulf towns of Normanton and Karumba and provided access to remote properties within the region.

"They are also heavily used by the grazing industry for stock transportation as well as tourists travelling the popular Gulf tourist circuit,” Ms Kiernan said.

"This maintenance work, which includes road surface, grading and culvert repairs, will improve safety and efficiency for transporters and motorists travelling on these key regional links."

Ms Kiernan said work being carried out under the contract formed an important part of Main Roads' commitment to maintaining a safe road network.

"In addition to roadworks, the contract provides for repairs to sign posts and the installation of new guide posts, both of which will improve safety for motorists," she said.

"Installing guide posts, particularly along curved sections of road, is an important safety measure to improve night visibility."

Aside from roadworks on the Burke Developmental Road, routine maintenance in the region will also include work on:
• Karumba Developmental Road (Walkers Creek to Karumba)
• Gulf Developmental Road (Normanton to North West Region border).

The maintenance works commenced late July and will continue through until June 2009.

Additional state-funded road projects in the Carpentaria Shire include a $2.9 million project to widen a 6km section of the Burke Developmental Road at Donors Hill, 260km north of Cloncurry. The project is due to commence in September 2008.
