Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
Education Minister meets show children at the EKKA
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford today met students from the Queensland School for Travelling Show Children, following the annual RNA Exhibition Cabinet meeting.
Mr Welford spoke to students and inspected a new marquee that the school has purchased, with a Bligh Government grant, to use as an outdoor classroom.
“The grant of $9400 from the School Community Development Fund has enabled the school to buy a marquee to replace one that was stolen last year,” Mr Welford said.
“The funding has also covered the cost of printing the school’s name and logo on all four marquees now owned by the school.
“The marquees enable classes to be held outside of semi-trailers in the great outdoors, which offers wonderful educational opportunities, from science lessons for older students to play-based programs for younger children.”
Mr Welford said the Queensland School for Travelling Show Children was a unique school which followed the agricultural show circuit around the country, educating the children of all occupational travellers, including travelling show families, itinerant families and equestrian competitors.
“A total of 64 students attend the school, and they travel with their families all over Queensland and interstate to New South Wales, the Northern Territory, Victoria and Tasmania,” he said.
“The school thrives on parental involvement and a strong community spirit, which ensures the learning environment is stimulating and varied.
“The new marquee and printed canopies will help reinforce the pride and unique personality of this school and the important part it plays in the lives and families of travelling show people.”
The Queensland School for Travelling Show Children is one of 1292 schools which has received funding under the one-off, $50 million School Community Development Fund, part of the Tomorrow's Schools – Providing for a Smarter Future package.
Through the program, grants have been provided for outdoor learning areas, sports and arts equipment, furniture upgrades, new kitchens and tuckshops.
