Independent filmmakers scoop pool at awards
Two independent filmmakers have scooped the pool at the 22nd annual Warner Roadshow Studios Queensland New Filmmakers Awards (QNFA).
A total of 29 awards, recognising all aspects of filmmaking from directing and writing to acting and sound, were presented at a ‘Classic Hollywood’ themed ceremony at Brisbane’s Tivoli Theatre last night (9 August).
Mr Welford said The Covenant of Mr Kasch – a 10-minute film written and directed by Joshua Beahan and Ruwan de Silva – took out three awards including Best Independent Other, Original Screen Music Award and Most Popular Film.
“The Queensland New Filmmakers Awards are Australia’s largest industry-sponsored new filmmaker awards offer tremendous support for emerging practitioners,” Mr Welford said.
“Presented by the Bligh Government through the Pacific Film and Television Commission, they are an important part of the St. George Brisbane International Film Festival.
“Over the past 21 years these awards have helped launch the careers of countless Queensland-based film industry professionals.
“I congratulate all 2008 winners and wish them well for their future careers in film.”
Mr Welford said For Your Eyes by Kavit Moody – a film about a woman’s struggle with her daughter’s health – also delivered great promise, winning two awards for Best Tertiary Drama and Most Promising New Filmmaker.
“More than 140 nominations were received for this year’s awards, with winners selected by a panel of industry judges based on criteria including originality, creativity and technical skill,” he said.
“These awards demonstrate the depth of creative talent working in this state, and I believe the high number of entrants and the overall calibre of finalist films bodes extremely well for future industry growth.”
