Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford

Film, TV and New Media students awarded for excellence

Sixteen film, television and new media students from state schools across Queensland will have their talents formally recognised tonight as part of the Bligh Government’s Creative Generation Excellence Awards in the Arts program.

Minister for Education, Training and the Arts, Rod Welford will present the Year 12 students with certificates in a special ceremony at Cutting Edge studios in West End.

“For the past week the students have been gaining first-hand knowledge about working in the film, television and new media industry from professionals in this field,” Mr Welford said.

“They’ve been working with editors, animators, visual effect artists, sound designers, stunt directors, actors, camera operators and producers.

“Students have also taken part in master classes at the St.George Bank Brisbane International Film Festival, production workshops at Griffith Film School, attended film screenings at The Regent Theatre and visited Warner Roadshow studios on the Gold Coast.

“Tonight the students will showcase their newly acquired skills by presenting a short film clip they’ve created.”

Mr Welford said the Creative Generation Excellence Awards in the Arts program celebrates artistic excellence in five art forms – dance, drama, contemporary and instrumental music, visual art and design and film, television and new media.

“Earlier in the year 60 talented dance, drama and contemporary music students attended workshops at the Brisbane Powerhouse,” he said.

“The third phase of the program, for senior state school students studying visual art and design, will be held later this year. This will be followed by MOST in 2009 – the biennial program for musically-outstanding students.

“The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in the Arts program supports all three aspects of my department’s vision for a clever, skilled and creative Queensland.

“It is important that we encourage our students to pursue artistic endeavours and encourage them to ‘think outside the square’ to find innovative solutions to problems.

“Research shows students who nurture their creative talents will have positive flow-on benefits in other areas of learning.”
