Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Main Roads is stepping up efforts to complete a major upgrade project on Moggill Road.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said Main Roads was acutely aware of the need to finish the project between Kilkivan Avenue and Pullenvale Road as soon as possible to help ease congestion for motorists.

"I understand and appreciate that motorists and residents have been through a lot while these works continue," Mr Pitt said.

“I can assure you though that Main Roads is making significant efforts to deliver this project by the end of the year.

"By making changes to the roadway design, Main Roads has been able to implement a quicker method of construction which, weather permitting, should see motorists driving on a new road by Christmas."

Work on the upgrade project was delayed in May 2008 when the original contractor for the project appointed an administrator.

Main Roads took on the project management of the works in June using existing sub-contractors to ensure the work was completed to a high standard and to help reduce impacts on motorists.

"Delivering this project while juggling the complications of working on one of Brisbane's busiest roads is definitely a challenge,” Mr Pitt said.

"Even though there’s a lot of pressure to complete these works, it is important that we maintain the same high levels of safety for our employees, as well as motorists on Moggill Road.

"Currently works are occurring behind safety barriers and Main Roads has removed central islands to allow vehicles to move safely onto the new roadway.

“They have also installed more overhead lighting and prioritised line marking and signage to make the area as safe as possible.

"Extra police officers have also been engaged to carry out traffic control during peak hours to maximise safety and increase traffic flow."

Local residents and businesses will be kept informed with regular construction updates as works continues.

"Everyone in the local area will be informed of the progress of these works, so keep an eye out for project flyers in your mailboxes, ads in local papers, and regular construction updates on the Main Roads website.

"Once again I would like to thank all motorists and residents for their patience, and ask them to please stick with us as we push ahead with these works as much as possible."

Once completed, the upgrade will offer a range of benefits for motorists and the local community, including increased safety, increased road capacity, reduced congestion and better pedestrian access.
