Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Work to start on Hospital Road

Preliminary work will commence next week (11 August 2008) on Emerald's Hospital Road to pave the way for a $5.3 million rehabilitation project in late September.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said a 1.6 kilometre section of the Gregory Highway would be repaired and strengthened following completion of the preliminary works.

"The project will significantly prolong the life of the existing pavement on the Gregory Highway, between Egerton and Harris Street to provide a safer, smoother trip for motorists," Mr Pitt said.

"Road workers will be on-site from next week (11 August), between 6am and 5pm, to make improvements to the centre median drainage system on Hospital Road."

Mr Pitt said an asphalt seal would be laid from the Fairbairn Bakery to the National Bank with isolated pavement repairs between the National Bank and Cameron Road.

"Hospital Road will be reduced to one lane in both directions and parking restrictions will be in place during these works," he said.

"Parking restrictions will be required to allow wide vehicles to safely pass through the site."

RoadTek Project Manager Phil McKenzie thanked motorists in advance for their patience during the project.

"In order for us to do our jobs effectively and safely, some delays are inevitable and we urge the public to allow for this while travelling on Hospital Road during the project," Mr McKenzie said.

"However we will do all we can minimise disruptions where possible.

"The preliminary works are due for completion in late September which will lead into the Hospital Road rehabilitation project, weather permitting."

Main Roads urges motorists to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signage throughout the project.
