Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Premier in Western Queensland
The Honourable Kerry Shine
Couples choose their lucky numbers to say ‘I do’ on Friday
A record number of Queensland couples are preparing to take the leap in to married life tomorrow at the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Brisbane, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine said today.
“It is going to be a busy day, with a record number of devoted couples tying the knot on the eighth day of the eighth month of the eighth year (08/08/08),” he said.
"Following one couple’s request, a special ceremony will be held at 8am.
"A second couple will also be the 808th wedding held at the Registry this year."
Mr Shine said the registry's Brisbane marriage room had extended its ceremony times to accommodate the many requests from couples, with the first booking for 8 August made back in May 2007.
"Thirteen celebrants will marry 33 couples this Friday which is the largest number of weddings the registry has ever hosted on one day," he said.
“The last time we hit a record was last year on 07/07/07, with 15 couples married.”
It was a case of 'first in, best dressed' as the registry received so many inquiries from couples wishing to wed in the marriage room they had to turn many away.
"With a record number of couples wanting to marry on the one day, the registry organised to hold ceremonies at both the Brisbane marriage room and the Hotel Conrad’s function room next door," Mr Shine said.
“The registry will be a buzz of activity and our celebrants will be kept busy throughout the day conducting ceremonies."
He said couples had chosen the date for many reasons.
"Some people consider the number eight to be quite auspicious and believe the number will bring prosperity and wealth,” he said.
“Others have indicated the date will make it easier to remember their wedding anniversary.”
In Queensland, 134 marriages were performed on 04/04/04, 67 marriages were carried out on 05/05/05, 25 marriages on 06/06/06 and 581 marriages on 07/07/07.
Mr Shine said the Brisbane Marriage Room had proved extremely popular since the registry relocated to the heritage-listed Old Government Printery building at 110 George Street, near the Botanic Gardens in late 2005.
"The marriage room hosts more weddings than any other venue in Queensland, with more than 1250 ceremonies held there in 2007," Mr Shine said.
"There was a record 26,008 marriages registered in Queensland last year alone."
