Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence

Sport Minister Judy Spence today encouraged Queenslanders to ‘find their 30’ at this year’s Ekka with the Department of Sport and Recreation’s outdoor rock wall challenge.

Ms Spence said: “The rock wall challenge is one of the free activities at the Ekka, providing a great opportunity for everyone to discover that getting active is easy and fun.

“Families and friends can take each other on in the challenge to see who can climb the exhilarating 8-metre wall in the shortest time.

“For those people who like to keep their feet on the ground, there is a mini-obstacle course, featuring a stair climb, tyre jumping challenge and balancing beam.

“There are some terrific prizes available for every child who takes part in the activities.

“There is now also more reason than ever to join the ‘Your 30 Club’, with every person who signs up at the Ekka going in the draw to win a new bike and helmet.

“The ‘Your 30 Club’ is a great way to stay connected and keep motivated with regular and up-to-date information, useful tips and healthy recipes to help you eat well and be active.

“The giant rock wall and the ‘Find Your 30’ display in the Queensland Government Pavillion will offer families a fun, exciting and interactive learning experience.”

Ms Spence said the display provides helpful tips and information on how finding 30 minutes of physical activity a day, along with healthy eating, can provide significant health benefits.

“The ‘Find Your 30’ campaign is a Queensland Government initiative which encourages all Queenslanders to adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle.

“Less than 50% of the Queensland adult population is sufficiently active to receive health benefits, and two out of three males and one in two females are overweight.

“Even more concerning is the fact that in the first year of school in Queensland, 17% of boys and 20% of girls are already overweight. For many of these children this means they will then become obese adults.

“For people of all ages, simple activities like brisk walking, swimming, dancing and cycling can help reduce the risk of developing heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, cancer and a range of other diseases.

“I urge everyone to visit the Department of Sport and Recreation display at the Ekka to learn how easy it is to ‘Find your 30’ each day and take positive steps towards a happier, healthier lifestyle.”

The Queensland Government Pavilion is located in the Frank Nicklin Pavilion, which is next to the Coffee Club Pavilion on Main Parade. The rock wall challenge is on the corner of Main Parade and Short Street.
