Queensland becomes cultural paradise during August
A colourful and exciting three-day festival showcasing Pacific Island culture will be the highlight of multicultural celebrations throughout Queensland this month.
Communities and Multicultural Affairs Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said Pasifika, to be staged at the Brisbane Powerhouse from 29-31 August, was one of 11 events taking place from Mareeba to Toowoomba during August, thanks to more than $93,000 in Queensland Government funding.
“Pasifika will be a celebration of the various Pacific Island cultures, featuring a full program of theatre, markets, dance and music, with international, national and local performers,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Traditional and contemporary art from Island nations such as Polynesia, Micronesia, New Zealand and Australia will also be a high-point of the three-day festival.
"Multicultural Assistance Program grants support a wide range of activities that highlight each community’s cultural diversity.
“The Queensland Government was pleased to provide $9500 to the Brisbane Powerhouse to support this unique event, which will not only entertain but also create a greater awareness of different Pacific Island cultures,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
Pasifika’s jam-packed program will also feature short films, animation, and magic and illusion performances. On the final day a church service will be held, followed by an afternoon of free music headlined by alternative New Zealand band Spasifix.
