Joint study to safeguard lung health of miners

A joint research project could lead to improvements in the lung health of miners in Queensland, Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said today.

Minister Wilson said the State Government and the University of Western Sydney had embarked on a joint investigation into the effects of silica dust on miners.

Silica dust can cause acute silicosis, a slow-developing, lung disease.

“The study will determine how silica dust is being controlled on work sites and what further improvements can be made,” he said.

Mr Wilson said the Queensland Mines Inspectorate had sent a questionnaire to industry in a bid to identify activities where workers may be exposed to silica dust.

Around 30 sites will be selected to take part in the study.

“It’s hoped the research results will identify ways to improve dust control and deliver benchmarks for best practice in the workplace,” he said.
