NEW EXHIBITION SHOWCASES QUEENSLAND ARCHITECTURE AT GOMA
The largest exhibition of contemporary architecture ever seen in an Australian art museum will be officially opened tonight (1 August) by Premier Anna Bligh at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA).
The Premier said Place Makers: Contemporary Queensland Architects featured more than 40 significant residential, public and institutional projects by 22 Queensland architectural practices over the past 20 years.
“This is a major exhibition showing the capabilities and ingenuity of Queensland architects, whose work represents the most exciting and innovative design in Australia,” Ms Bligh said.
“Our architects have created an abundance of strong and innovative work that has gone unrecorded for too long.
“Place Makers changes this with its coverage of the state’s most exciting recent architecture, as well as an in-depth look at the architectural responses to the ‘timber and tin’ tradition of the ‘Queenslander’.
“Place Makers shows the innovation and creativity that is alive and well in Queensland’s design industry and illustrates the strong future our state has on the world stage.
Arts Minister Rod Welford said the Bligh Government recognised the value of good design to environmental sustainability and the economy.
“The Premier recently announced $1.5 million in funding for the development of a design triennial, which is part of the $3 million Designing Queensland strategy. The Gold Coast’s Philip Follent was also recently appointed Government Architect,” Mr Welford said.
“This exhibition, which features photography, personal stories, models, films and sketches, is a milestone for Queensland architecture and I encourage Queenslanders to experience it,” he said.
The exhibition is open until 23 November.
Architectural practices featured in the exhibition are: Rex Addison, Andresen O’Gorman Architects, Arkhefield, Bark, Bligh Voller Nield, Bud Brannigan Architects, Lindsay & Kerry Clare (Architectus), Cox Rayner Architects, Donovan Hill, Elizabeth Watson Brown Architects, Ian Moore Architects, James Russell Architect, JMA Architects QLD, m3architecture, Owen and Vokes, Phorm Architecture + Design, Gabriel Poole, Richard Kirk Architect, Riddel Architecture, Steendÿk, Jennifer Taylor and James Conner and Wilson Architects.
