Sunshine Plaza goes green with new recycling project

The Sunshine Plaza is the first shopping centre in Queensland to go green as part of the Bligh government’s $1 million public place recycling initiative.

Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation Minister Andrew McNamara today congratulated the Maroochydore shopping centre for installing recycling bins to encourage its shoppers to recycle.

“The Sunshine Plaza receives around 11 million visitors each year,” Mr McNamara said.

“Nearly 50 per cent of recyclable material is generated away from home. This project will help Queenslanders recycle when they are out and about.

“One of the problems encountered in recycling is that people put food scraps into recycling bins, which contaminates the materials.

“The new bins will be clearly signed, including the message Do the right thing, use the right bin.

“The new signage will encourage shoppers to use the right bin, ensuring that more waste can be recycled.

“Recycling helps reduce the rubbish going to landfill and reduces energy and water consumption this is great news for the environment.”

The program will see the bins placed at major public events, shopping centres and parks across the next two years.

“I would like to thank Lend Lease and the Sunshine Plaza team, for partnering with the State Government in this recycling project,” Mr McNamara said.
