Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
Rave reviews for Fanfare finalists
Some of Queensland’s most talented young musicians raised the roof of the Concert Hall at QPAC last night in the grand final concert of Fanfare, Australia’s biggest musical festival for bands and orchestras from state schools.
Minister for Education, Training and the Arts Rod Welford congratulated MacGregor State High School Percussion Ensemble on winning top honours in Fanfare.
“This year’s Fanfare program involved 20,909 students from 360 state schools throughout Queensland,” Mr Welford said.
“The calibre of performances at last night’s concert was stunning. The 11 state finalists are excellent ambassadors for state schools in Queensland and they should be very proud of their achievements.”
Last night’s grand final concert was the culmination of a three-day program involving 460 instrumental music students from 11 ensembles and their teachers.
The ensembles gathered in Brisbane earlier this week to take part in an adjudication process for the opportunity to perform at the grand final concert.
Mr Welford presented the winners with the Erica Brindley Memorial Trophy for the most outstanding performance of the night.
“Prior to the state finals program, more than 700 bands and orchestras competed at regional festivals, showcasing the outstanding results of Queensland’s acclaimed instrumental music program,” he said.
“Queensland is known by music educators and industry professionals Australia-wide and internationally for the quality of instrumental music education in state schools.
“Fanfare is just one facet of a program which caters for more than 45,000 students in more than 750 schools.”
The Fanfare 2008 state finalists were:
• Middle Park State School Senior String Orchestra
• Yeppoon State High School Concert Band
• Cairns State High School Orchestra
• Helensvale State High School Big Band
• Kingaroy State High School Concert Band
• Pimlico State High School Symphony Orchestra
