Gaven goes green for National Tree Day for Schools

Main Roads on the Gold Coast is showing its green thumb and planting for future generations as part of a community greening initiative.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said Main Roads had joined forces with Greening Australia to host a special tree planting event with Nerang State School today (Friday 1 August).

"Nerang State School students, parents and teachers were on hand for National Tree Day for Schools to help 'sow the seeds’ for an ecologically sustainable future," Mr Pitt said.

"In conjunction with Greening Australia and Main Roads, 30 students planted more than 1000 native plants to rehabilitate the riverbank between Nerang Connection Road and Southport-Nerang Road.”

Member for Gaven Phil Gray, who attended the event on behalf of Mr Pitt, said the work was further evidence of the State Government’s commitment to sustainable and effective vegetation management on its land corridors.

"Nerang State School has a genuine commitment to the environment, so we thought it would be great to get the local kids involved in this greening initiative," he said.

Mr Gray said the event provided school children with an opportunity to help the environment and the community.

"This is actually the third time the same group of students have teamed up to work on revegetation in the area," Mr Gray said.

"Together, we are working to create an environmental corridor to connect the Nerang River with Nerang State Forest.

"It's fantastic to see the Nerang Primary School's environment club, Enviro Rangers, continuing to preserve and enhance their own local environment."

Main Roads funded the planting as part of its commitment to the restoration of roadside reserves.
