The nation’s premier foundry training centre was officially opened today at SkillsTech Australia’s Acacia Ridge Training Centre.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the $7.5 million foundry was part of the Bligh Government’s strategy to reduce skills shortages, particularly in the state’s manufacturing sector.

“The new foundry training facility gives about 120 students access to the latest technology and will allow SkillsTech to deliver short courses to specialised industry groups,” Mr Welford said.

“The courses have grown significantly in popularity in the last six years – from 22 apprentices to 120 apprentices.

“The new foundry training facility will cater for the anticipated growth of apprentices of between 15 to 20 per cent over the next five years.

“Following the expansion of its facilities and programs in foundry and patternmaking, SkillsTech Australia is well positioned to become the lead centre for training in Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific Region.

“SkillsTech Australia, a key component of our Government's $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan was created two years ago to modernise trade and technician training throughout the State.

“This financial year our Government will invest a further $54.7 million in SkillsTech Australia for ongoing construction at Acacia Ridge and detailed planning and construction of specialised trade training centres in Townsville and Mackay.

“SkillsTech Australia has a proud record of achievements in both partnerships and strategic alliances with industry.”

Industry played a major role in the design and development of the foundry project through the Local Advisory Working Group.

The foundry’s design incorporates sustainability features such as motion detectors that control lighting and air conditioning, the use of recycled water and an energy-efficient security system.

The Minister was represented by Parliamentary Secretary Bonny Barry who officially opened the foundry facility.
