Heavy Vehicle Testing Services Delivered to remote communities

Julia Creek police and courthouse staff will take to the road tomorrow (Friday 1st August) to hold licence tests for employees on remote cattle stations.

Police Minister Judy Spence and Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine said police and the registrar of the Julia Creek Magistrates Court will travel 130 kilometres to Millungera cattle station to conduct heavy vehicle licensing tests.

“The Queensland Police Service and Queensland Courts are working together to hold both written and practical licence tests for employees from several remote stations,” Ms Spence said.

“They will take equipment with them so licences can be issued to the successful applicants on the spot.

“Safe operation of heavy vehicles is essential in all parts of the state. This initiative is about making sure workers in remote areas can obtain a licence and operate responsibly.
“This is a great example of the Queensland Government working with rural communities to deliver services where they are needed.”

Mr Shine said people in remote communities often had to travel great distances to access services most people took for granted.

“This initiative allows employees at remote stations to access this service where they work, or to come from nearby properties, providing real cost and time savings,” Mr Shine said.

“Many cattle station employees require a heavy-duty vehicle licence to move cattle around.

“The combination of large distances and a busy cattle-mustering season mean it is just not practical or possible for many people to travel to town centres for the licensing test.
“We are constantly seeking ways to deliver services to remote areas. This uses smart technology to take services to remote areas.”

The Millungera cattle station is approximately 130 kilometres north of Julia Creek.

Mr Shine said the Julia Creek courthouse will be closed on Friday 1st August to allow staff to travel to the Millungera cattle station and conduct the tests.
