Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson
Clever solutions to help tackle climate change
Hydro, wind, solar and geothermal are just some of the solutions that clever companies have come up with to help the Bligh Government tackle climate change, Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said today.
Minister Wilson said almost 20 companies had taken up the Bligh Government’s offer to help turn their innovative ideas into reality through the $50 million Renewable Energy Fund.
“We’re striking a partnership with the energy industry and investors and our fund holds the key to unlocking Queensland’s untapped potential in renewable energy sources,” Mr Wilson said.
“Renewable energy is the fuel of the future. Our fund is a real shot in the arm and it will help industry come up with clever solutions in areas like geothermal, solar, biomass, bagasse and other renewable energy sources.
“Ideally we’re looking for projects with the potential for large-scale commercial application, industrial power projects with a carbon-neutral emissions profile that can produce a reliable electricity supply and meet local energy supply needs,” he said.
“It’s a great opportunity for businesses with an entrepreneurial flair to exploit what Queensland has to offer.
“We have so much renewable energy potential here. Our climate is ideal for solar powered generation. There are hot rocks in abundance in the west, and bagasse from sugar cane farms in the north.
“Our money is on the table, our sleeves are rolled up and we’re tackling climate change head on.
“It’s now 157 days since the Leader of the Opposition promised Queenslanders a renewable energy policy. He still hasn’t delivered. He has an opinion on everything and a solution for nothing,” Mr Wilson said.
The Minister said funding could be in the form of a loan for up to 100% of the project’s value or as a grant for up to half the project’s capital cost.
Applications are being assessed by the Department of Mines and Energy and successful applicants will be announced in the coming months.
