Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts

SES volunteers recognised for more than six decades of service

Three State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers from western Queensland were recognised for more than 60 years’ combined service at a ceremony at Aramac today.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts presented the service medals to Aramac SES Local Controller Doug Churchill, Warren Smith (Aramac) and Rodney Little (Muttaburra SES).

Mr Roberts said Mr Churchill, a firefighter, received a 25 years’ Meritorious Service Medal and National Medal Clasp. Mr Churchill first joined the SES in Barcaldine in 1981, and has served with the SES at Duaringa, Normanton, and Cloncurry over the last 12 years, at Aramac.

Warren Smith, also of Aramac SES, was awarded a 15 years’ Meritorious Service Medal and National Medal. Mr Rodney Little was awarded a 20 years’ Meritorious Service Medal.
In April, former Aramac SES Local Controller Roger Warren was recognised with a National Medal Clasp for 25 years, which was presented by Premier Anna Bligh and Mr Roberts during the Government’s Community Cabinet meeting at Bribie Island.

“SES volunteers train in general rescue, storm damage, floodboat rescue, land and forensic search, height safety, traffic control and first aid,” Mr Roberts said.

“SES members at Aramac have been called upon in many incidents including in 2004 when Aramac suffered intense flooding as result of cyclones Fritz and Grace and the severe storm that extensively damaged buildings at Aramac in December 2005.”

Mr Roberts said the three SES volunteers had demonstrated a strong commitment to Queensland communities.

“I pay tribute to them, their families and friends for the sacrifices they have made,” he said.

Meritorious Service Medals are awarded to SES volunteers who have achieved 10 years of dedicated service. Clasps are awarded for each additional five years of dedicated service, while the National Medal is awarded to a person who has completed a period of 15 years diligent service, with a clasp awarded after each further period of 10 years qualifying service.
