The Honourable Geoff Wilson
From aggregates to zinc, anyone with an interest in mining in Queensland will find references to them all in the latest mining journal, released today by Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson.
The winter edition of the Queensland Government Mining Journal has articles on base metals, clean coal, infrastructure, the booming North West minerals province and health and safety issues.
“Mining is forging ahead in Queensland. It’s powering the state, bringing in $26 billion to the state’s economy in 2006-07,” Mr Wilson said.
Minister Wilson said the winter edition looks at emerging clean coal technologies, providing a snapshot of ZeroGen Mark II.
“ZeroGen could become the first in the world to combine coal gasification with carbon capture and storage, to produce electricity with low carbon dioxide emissions.
“It’s all about smarter, cleaner power – converting coal into hydrogen to generate power,” he said.
ZeroGen plans to build a demonstration power plant close to the Stanwell power station near Rockhampton.
“It aims to capture carbon dioxide released in the combustion process at the site, and store it underground in deep saline reservoirs in the Northern Denison Trough,” he said.
Mr Wilson said the latest journal has information on Queensland’s coal seam gas industry, with a report on the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association’s recent conference.
“It also provides a progress report on the southern missing link and the Townsville Port Access Road,” he said.
First published in 1900, the mining journal is the state’s flagship mining publication.
