Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle
Tourists visiting Cape York Peninsula will soon have much better guidance when it comes to exploring this famed wild and beautiful region.
Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle today announced funding of $150,000 for the Cape York Peninsula Signage Project.
The Minister said the funding would go to the Cape York Peninsula Development Association (CYPDA).
“This project will plan, design and erect appropriate tourism road signage throughout Cape York Peninsula and also meets a target of the Draft Cape York Peninsula Tourism Development Action Plan,” Ms Boyle said.
“The signage will define the key drive tourism route and alternative drive tourism routes.
“This will increase visitor satisfaction and confidence which will then increase length of stay which means greater economic and social benefits to the Cape York region.”
Ms Boyle said that the CYPDA was one of five Remote Area Boards funded by the Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry under the Queensland Regional Development Initiative.
Funding has previously been provided to the CYPDA for initiatives including the establishment of a Community Bank, horticultural brand development and tourism database development.
“Tourism is a key industry for this region and our Government certainly sees it as a priority when it comes to providing support,” Ms Boyle said.
“Around 80,000 people visit Cape York and the Torres Strait each year and the number is growing.
“Those who come to the Cape are looking for adventure, cultural stimulation and the opportunity to explore a natural wonderland. One of the greatest attractions is to stand at the tip of Australia.
“Some of the most popular activities for visitors include fishing, bushwalking, camping, 4WDriving, wildlife spotting, visiting Aboriginal rock art sites and significant cultural sites and experiencing the outback lifestyle.
“Better signage is sure to enhance the experience of all those who visit the Cape.”
