More than 6,000 homes and businesses around Kenmore are set to power ahead following a $1.9 million upgrade to electricity supplies being carried out by Energex.

Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said work had started on a major Energex project to boost power to the western suburb.

Energex will install new 11,000 volt underground electricity cables in pipes from its substation at Kenmore Village, through Cedarleigh Road to Kenmore Tavern, and from Aronia Street to Branton Street, and across the creek to Parklane Terrace.

“Brisbane’s western suburbs are growing rapidly. Dozens of new homes, units and businesses are being connected to the local electricity network every week,” Mr Wilson said.

“The Bligh Government is planning for and managing all this growth. And that’s the driving force behind the upgrade.

“More and more households are using air-conditioners these days. Air-conditioners and plasma televisions are just two factors that have led to the sharp increase in power usage.

“This is about meeting the need for electricity, now and in the future,” he said.

The project will involve some excavation works to lay the underground power cables.

As a result local businesses, residents and motorists may experience some noise disruptions, heavy vehicle movement, footpath obstructions and partial road closures.

Safety measures, including traffic management, will be undertaken during the upgrade.

“I thank residents and motorists in advance for their patience while the work is being carried out.

“It’s an important power upgrade and Energex has given an assurance that they will do their best to keep any inconvenience to a minimum.

Works are expected to be completed by the end of October, depending on the weather.
