It’s Christmas in July for Queensland’s children in care as Child Safety Minister Margaret Keech joins with the REIQ to launch the Foster Child Christmas Present Drive.

Mrs Keech and REIQ chairman Peter McGrath are encouraging people to buy one extra Christmas gift this year and donate it to children and young people in care.

“Last year’s present drive on the Gold Coast was such a huge success – with more than 500 gifts donated by caring locals – that in 2008 we are expanding the present drive to regions around Queensland,” Mrs Keech said.

“Thanks to the work of the REIQ almost every child in care on the Gold Coast received an extra gift on Christmas Day, letting them know that they are wanted and cared for.

“There are more than 7400 Queensland children in care and we want them all to feel the same way.

“Spending Christmas away from family can be tough on these children, by spoiling them on Christmas morning we can let them know people really do care about them.”

“An extra present for every child in the care of the department, and every child will know they really are special.

“All you need to do is buy a small gift and mark the age and sex of the child who it would be appropriate for, and drop it off at any Child Safety Service Centre on the Gold Coast, Townsville, Sunshine Coast, Cairns or Brisbane.

“This is more than a present this is reminding children they really are loved and cared for, truly important feelings that help them grow into happy adults.

You could also leave a gift under the tree in the foyer of 111 George St or at selected REIQ offices.

REIQ chairman Peter McGrath said he was pleased to see such a successful initiative expanded this year.

“The REIQ is proud to be part of the Foster Child Christmas Present Drive which aims to put a smile on thousands of children’s faces during this year’s festive season.

“The Institute also congratulates the Department of Child Safety on this wonderful initiative, now expanded for its second year.

“REIQ has very close connections with their local communities, through their accredited agencies and as major sponsor of Neighbourhood Watch.

“The Institute recognises how important it is that everyone has the opportunity to experience a happy and joyful Christmas.

“The REIQ encourages everyone to take part in this initiative, which will help make a difference in the lives of some 7500 foster children living in Queensland.”
