SUGGESTIONS FLOOD IN FOR BRIDGE

Premier Anna Bligh says the State Government has received a flood of suggestions to name Brisbane’s latest river crossing.

The Premier, Sunday Mail editor Liz Deegan and new Queensland Government architect Philip Follent will judge the competition to name the bridge at Tank St shortly after entries close on September 30, 2008.

“By Friday we had received almost 100 suggestions and the ideas keep coming. Send your ideas to us or send them to The Sunday Mail,” said Premier Anna Bligh.

“Suggestions have ranged from naming the bridge after historical ships to local aboriginal names, to names that will probably raise a chuckle.

“The competition closes on 30 September this year and I encourage people from all over the State to have a go.

“This is a way of making your mark on Queensland’s capital. This bridge will be here for a long time. It will become a landmark that every person in our State can be proud of.”

Suggestions submitted include ‘Endeavour Bridge’, which has a nautical theme after Captain Cook’s famous ship.

‘Amity Bridge’ was also suggested, named after explorer John Oxley’s ship which sailed into Brisbane in 1824.

Other nautical names included ‘The Rigger Bridge’. ‘The Bounty Bridge’ and ‘The Nautical Mile’.

Among the other ideas were ‘The Peace Bridge’, ‘Biped Bridge’, ‘Expression Bridge’, ‘Reconciliation Bridge’ and ‘The Workers Walk’.

Some aboriginal names included ‘Kurilpa Bridge’, after the indigenous name for that part of West End and ‘Woyoworrin Bridge’ after an aboriginal word for fishing line.

“As I said last week, this is our capital city. It belongs to all Queenslanders and all Queenslanders should have a stake in the shape of it,” said the Premier.

“So this Sunday why not sit down and see if what you can come up with becomes part of Queensland history.”

The new Tank Street Bridge will link Brisbane City to the new Millennium Arts Precinct at the Queensland Cultural Centre, completing a pedestrian and cycle loop between the city and South Bank via the Goodwill Bridge.
