Main Roads kicks a goal with new footy fields at Wacol

New sporting fields and club facilities for western Brisbane's junior rugby league community were opened today, as part of a $6.5 million commitment to relocate facilities affected by the Ipswich Motorway upgrade.

Member for Mount Ommaney Julie Attwood said the new PJ McIllwain Place at Wacol would provide a new and improved home for the West Centenary Junior Rugby League Football Club.

"The club is thrilled with its new, up-to-date home, which includes four full-sized match fields, a new clubhouse with change rooms, training facilities, office, canteen, licensed bar area and parking for more than 175 vehicles," Ms Attwood said.

“This will give the players and visitors at PJ McIlwain Place an enhanced and more comfortable environment, before, during and after their matches, which can only help to increase local participation,” she said.

Ms Attwood represented Minister for Main Roads Warren Pitt at a community open day to commemorate the new fields, alongside Federal Member for Oxley Bernie Ripoll.

“The club’s previous location was required for a new interchange as part of the upgrade to the Ipswich Motorway,” Ms Attwood said.

“Formerly located off the Centenary Highway at Darra, the new fields have been relocated to Grindle Road at Wacol as part of the Wacol-Darra section of the Ipswich Motorway Upgrade,” she said.

“The club's former home is needed for construction of a new multi-level Centenary Highway Interchange as part of the upgrade.”

Mr Pitt said a new free-flow ramp would be built from the Centenary Highway onto the Ipswich Motorway to improve safety and traffic flow, using some of the former fields.

”In addition, construction of the new Darra to Springfield rail line has significant impacts on the football fields,” he said.

"The Queensland Government is very pleased to be able to contribute to the development of this new and improved facility, and keep local kids playing league."

The new football fields are located at the end of Grindle Road at Wacol, just before historic Wolston House.
