Queensland aviation careers on show
The career diversity of Queensland’s aviation and aerospace industries will be on show at the eighth annual Aviation Careers Expo today.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford officially opened the Expo at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
“The Expo raises awareness of career options from pilots and cabin crew to aircraft maintenance in an industry that has grown by more than 14,000 jobs in the last eight years,” Mr Welford said.
“More than 30 representatives from some of the largest aerospace businesses, airlines and flying schools in Australia are here to outline the exciting career prospects.
“The Careers Expo has gained a reputation as the catalyst for attracting hundreds of new recruits to Queensland’s aviation and aerospace industries.
“There are many opportunities with the global aviation industry facing unprecedented skills shortages both here as well as in Asia and the Middle East.”
Mr Welford said despite predictions of a shake-up of the global airline industry, due to the record oil prices, Queensland’s aviation industry was in a good position.
“Queensland’s diverse and thriving aviation industry is underpinned by the booming mineral and resources sector and defence industry expansion at Amberley, Oakey and Townsville,” Mr Welford said.
“Our Government certainly recognises the potential of the industry, establishing Australia’s first high school to cater for students with a passion for aerospace and aviation careers.
“Aviation High, which opened last year, is also the hub for 17 gateway schools through Education Queensland’s Aerospace Project which was established with industry partners in 2004.”
Careers Expo host, Aviation Australia, was established seven years ago by the Queensland Government to offer comprehensive, high-quality training, tailor made for the aviation industry.
“It’s now recognised as the leading aviation training organisation in the Asia Pacific region delivering a wide range of training and related services to more than 60 airlines and aerospace companies,” Mr Welford said.
Since 2002, Aviation Australia has trained approximately 900 aircraft apprentices in the three trade streams of mechanical, avionics and structures and 98 different companies have employed Aviation Australia apprentices.
