The Honourable John Mickel
Outcomes highlight Queensland’s strong export results
The Queensland Government’s export agency, Trade Queensland, has delivered outstanding results in assisting Queensland companies to take advantage of opportunities in overseas markets over the past year.
During estimates hearings this week, Minister for Trade John Mickel announced the latest Trade Queensland performance results showing that the agency assisted Queensland companies to secure over half a billion dollars worth of export deals last financial year.
“Trade Queensland’s most recent figures show that the agency helped to generate $519 million in export sales in 2007-08,” Mr Mickel said.
“This is an outstanding result, with Trade Queensland assisting 2862 clients to get export ready and to make new export deals in the last financial year. 48% of the clients assisted were from regional Queensland.
“Trade Queensland helps Queensland companies to export by providing export advice, market information and skills development programs to help companies make informed export decisions on the path to achieving exporting success.
“Trade Queensland also supports businesses through industry-focused trade missions, business introductions that are linked to inbound trade visits, and other Queensland export promotional events held within the State and internationally.
“Last year’s 17 trade missions generated over $57 million in export deals for Queensland businesses,” Mr Mickel said.
“Queensland’s knowledge-intensive exports continue to grow – way ahead of all other Australian states. Knowledge-intensive exports increased by $487 million or 12.7 % from $3.8 billion in 2005-06 up to $4.3 billion in 2006-07.
“These exports increased from $2.9 billion in 2001-2002 to $4.3 billion in 2006-07. That is an increase of over 50% in 5 years.
“When it comes to knowledge-intensive industries we can boast a growth rate ahead of NSW at 11.8%, Victoria at 11.7%, South Australia at 8.9% and the rest of Australia at 9.9%.
“Our leading knowledge-intensive goods exports include the manufacturing of a range of goods – lifting and material handling equipment, professional and scientific equipment, food processing machinery, and household appliances.
“And Queensland excels in marketing our education and training services to the world.
“Queensland Education and Training International (QETI) reports that, for the 2007 calendar year, a total of 68,284 international students enrolled in Queensland institutions and that the value of Queensland’s international education exports was $1.614 billion in 2006-07.
“In an outstanding illustration of Queensland’s reputation for international education, the Government of Chile – having chosen Australia, Canada and Spain as the worldwide destinations for an $11 million vocational education scholarship program - went a step further and gave all the Australian scholarships to Queensland.
Mr Mickel said that he was also impressed by the latest figures on the Queensland Government’s Latin American Mining Initiative (LAMI) showing that it has produced a total of $52.5 million in export sales since its inception in April 2006, including $20 million worth of outcomes in 2007/08.
“LAMI contributed to 23 separate export deals in 2007-08, ranging from the sale of refining equipment, mineral analysis detectors, engineering services, training, laboratory services and software for financial planning,” Mr Mickel said.
“The LAMI project concluded at the end of April 2008, and Trade Queensland is currently developing further initiatives to ensure that Queensland businesses will continue to be supported in pursuing growing export opportunities in the Latin American mining sector,” he said.
