Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

The Acting Attorney-General John Mickel has announced the appointment of four new Magistrates.

Mr Mickel said James McDougall, Ross Mack, Kay Ryan and John Hutton join the ranks of Queensland’s 87 Magistrates after their appointment by the Governor-in-Council yesterday.

Mr McDougall will be appointed to the Beenleigh Magistrates Court, Mr Mack to the Townsville Magistrates Court, Ms Ryan to the Toowoomba Magistrates Court and Mr Hutton has been appointed to the position of Southport Coroner.

“Mr McDougall has a wealth of experience in the area of medical and professional negligence litigation, involving extensive trial experience in the Supreme and District Courts in Queensland and New South Wales and in the appellant jurisdiction in the Court of Appeal in Queensland and in New South Wales and in the High court, “ Mr Mickel said.

“Mr Mack has been an Acting Magistrate since June 2000 and also has experience as a Townsville Crown Prosecutor, Charleville Legal Officer and Magistrates Court Registrar in Ayr and Weipa.

“His appointment to Townsville Magistrates Court will contribute a plethora of knowledge on the legal issues affecting regional Queensland”, Mr Mickel said.

“Ms Ryan has a diversity of legal experience gained over more than a decade of practice, spanning issues including mental health, regional resolutions, personal injury law, workers compensation and motor vehicle and public liability.

“Ms Ryan’s diversity will contribute valuable knowledge in her new appointment to the Toowoomba Magistrates Court.

“Mr Hutton has practised at the Bar for over 30 years, bringing to the role of Southport Coroner an abundance of experience.

“His appointment will take pressure off local Magistrates who have had to sit on coronial matters in addition to their regular workload.

”All four appointees are a valuable addition to the Magistrates ranks in Queensland and will continue the excellent work of the judiciary in our busiest courts,” Mr Mickel said.
