The Honourable John Mickel
Grant gets Gympie trainees into workforce
Hard graft on a Queensland Government Gympie Skilling Queenslanders for Work project has paid off for six participants who’ve now have jobs to call their own.
Another five participants will graduate tomorrow from the same vegetation management project with a host of skills and paid work experience for their efforts.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said Gympie & District Landcare Group co-ordinated the $402,180 jobs project which has helped 41 jobseekers in the Cooloola Shire during the past 11 months
“This graduation marks the end of a project which also included landscaping and construction of community assets,” Mr Mickel said.
“Tomorrow’s five graduates have made a valuable community contribution through their work during the past 17 weeks.
“Assisting with plant propagation and construction of water recycling equipment at Gympie Landcare Revegetation Nursery was one of two major work projects.
“Another was helping build infrastructure at Gympie Landcare to aid in the production of bio-control agents to combat the spread of the aquatic weed salvinia.
“Even in times of low unemployment it’s vital to ensure people are equipped with the skills necessary to meaningfully participate in the workforce.
“This is what the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is about.”
Gympie & District Landcare Group General Manager Kevin Dailly said graduates also benefited from varied training.
“Instruction in first aid and gaining a construction blue card comprise part of the training, along with individualised jobsearch skills and career planning,” Mr Dailly said.
“Personalised job assistance is an important part of the project – the participants often feel much more positive and focused as a result.
“A highlight for many of tomorrow’s graduates was a visit to a sustainable bush foods farm which demonstrated ways to establish and use these crops.
“In this case the proof was in the muffin, rather than the pudding!”
The graduation will take place at 10:00am at 5 Groves Road Gympie on Friday 25 July, 2008.
During 2008/09 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 15,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving assistance 71 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
